I write this as I am sitting on a 6-hour flight across the country. I didn’t really have all that much to do and so I thought I could write 10 Things to do on a Plane. :)
1. Sleep
This one is pretty obvious for anyone who has been on a plane for more than two hours. Flights can just make you sleepy. So don’t forget to pack your neck pillow and jacket/blanket so that you can get as comfortable as possible. (honestly, it probably wont be very comfortable)
2. Read or Listen to an Audiobook
Something that can pass the time really well is to read. Before your flight, find a couple books that interest you and download or buy them. If you don’t enjoy reading so much then why not listen to an audiobook? Many people prefer to listen to an audiobook to reading. Three apps that are great for this are Kindle, Audible, and Libby. You can get a few free books on kindle and audible but most likely you will have to buy a book. They are usually pretty cheap and you have them forever. Libby is an app which links connects to your library and you can get thousands of books for free for two weeks! It is basically a library for your phone! Just make sure you borrow the books before you take off and lose connection. (it also has audiobooks.)
3. Write Down Your Thoughts in a Journal/Diary
Life can get so crazy that we can forget to take time to slow down and think through things that may happened recently or things coming up in the near future. During a flight can be one of the best opportunities to get everything that has been in your head down on paper where you can sort through them more easily. Really focus on taking time and being thorough in your writing.
4. Watch Movies & Shows
This one is pretty self explanatory as almost every aircraft has a tv built in to the back of the seat. They usually have a pretty decent selection of genres. Many times they will have music too. So if you don’t happen to have anything you want to listen to on your phone, you can also look for something there. If you have a certain film or show you want to watch on the plane then download it to your laptop and you can watch it on there also.
5. Take & Edit Photos
Honestly this is one if your really bored. I usually find myself doing this by the end of my flight as I have exhausted all my other options.if you happen to be sitting in a window seat you will almost always have good lighting for selfies and if the weather and clouds are cooperating then you can get some pretty cool shots. I usually just use my phone’s camera app for pictures but I also love using an app called HUJI. It adds a filter to the pictures and makes them look s if they were taken on an instant camera. You could also go back through your old photos and have an editing session
6. Color, Doodle, or Draw
If you have any extra space in your carry-on pack a notebook or adult coloring book and some colored pencils. This one is only helpful if your into this kind of thing. If you are it is a great way to pass the time and is very relaxing.
7. Plan Out the Next Few Days
Again, this is precious time that you can take advantage of. Whether you are on a business trip, vacation, or simply headed home, there is always something coming up and something to do. Plan out where you are going in the next week or so and what exactly you need to accomplish on certain days. This is a really great use of time that you otherwise may not have had.
8. Write Goals
Ok I realize that I have put down many points about writing. This is the last one, I promise. Writing goals is a great way to look ahead and accomplish something you would not have done if you never wrote down the goals. You can write very simple goals or something that will be much more difficult to accomplish. This is something that is really satisfying to write down and check off later.
9. Get Unready
When you are in the middle of a long flight, you can start to feel pretty gross from sitting and sleeping all day and eating airplane food. If you can, bring along some makeup wipes take off your makeup completely, maybe use a sheet mask, and put some fuzzy socks on. You should also bring lotion and chapstick along with you as plane air and its lack of humidity really can dry out your hands and lips regardless of the season.
10. Listen to a Podcast
Last One! I used to be opposed to listening to podcasts as I thought I had no time for them. I mostly listened to music and was happy with that. But recently I have been listening to them a lot more. If you download a couple long episodes and find some that really are interesting to you then these are perfect for any trip. A few of my favorite podcasts are “Beyond the To-Do List”, “Happy Place”, and “Stuff You Missed in History Class.”
I hope that you found a few things to keep yourself occupied other than sitting bored and waiting impatiently to land at your destination. What do you normally do on your flights?
